Gunpowder 57 is Gunpowder Proof. Until the early 1800s, the British Navy used the 'Gunpowder Proof test' to determine the amount of alcohol in the ship's rations. A small mixture of gunpowder and alcohol was made, and if it ignited when lit, it was 57% or more, and thus Gunpowder Proof.
In addition to ensuring that they did not overpay for watered-down spirits, it also meant that the ship's gunpowder would not be ruined in case of leaky barrels of spirits.
GUNPOWDER 57 is distilled in Jamaica and subsequently refined on Fanø. The refinement consists of a two-stage maturation. First, it is matured with natural ingredients (including Fanø heather honey, sea buckthorn and Madagascar vanilla), after which it is aged in port wine barrels.
GUNPOWDER 57 won a bronze medal in the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2020.
